Backstory
Barley was a young Holstein calf that was taken to the state fair for a 4-H competition. While at the fair he was well looked after, but due to unfortunate circumstances the young boy developed Clostridial Disease, and thereafter became very lethargic and couldn't eat. Overnight the weary young bull-calf furrowed himself away into the deepest portion of the loose hay and straw on his pen floor, settling in the softest space for a rest- and eventually succumbed to the sudden and deadly illness. When the calf's humans returned the next morning he had already passed, curled up in the hay and seemingly peacefully asleep- a small mercy he'd drifted off rather painlessly, besides a sort of aching empty belly, since he'd been too sick to eat.
All the calf remembers is falling asleep though, warm and the world soft and smelling of fresh hay... and perhaps even with some strange lullaby drifting in his ears, brought by the esk who transformed the much too young life, and gave it a new start.
